30 Better Life Tips

Hi it’s Dave,

Greetings from Ilfracombe and welcome to Under Blue Skies.  I am very excited about some new developments that are on the horizon.  These ideas will see changes to the way my posts are created.

Sharing these pages with everyone goes a long way towards stimulating me to keep writing them and over the weeks to come I will be trying out some new ideas.

For today’s piece I have pulled together a number of tips that we can use to help us live a better life.

So here are

30 Better Life Tips

01. Never take financial advice from someone who is broke
02. Walk down the street and with a big beaming smile on your face say hello to everyone you meet
03. Write a letter to someone you are grateful to, tell them exactly how and why, then post if.
04. Find someone who is worse off than you are then offer your help and assistance.
05. Spend at least 30 mins every day walking in complete silence no phone no distraction just you and complete silence
06. Time for a clear out- go through your things and get rid of everything you don't need or use any more.
07. Ban the news - don't read newspapers or watch tv for at least 24 hours
08. Before going to bed at night read an inspirational passage or phrase or listen to an inspirational tape
09. Find somewhere quiet and spend at least 20 minutes in quiet calm contemplation
10. To celebrate the new changes in your life buy and wear something as a symbol of your new path such as a bracelet, a pendant or a toe ring

11. Adjust your schedule so that you have less commitments during the day
12. Move more slowly and with purpose
13. It is better to show others that you love them rather than simply telling them
14. Be mindful of the food and drink you put into your body - treat yourself kindly
15. Let your inner child play at least once every day
16. Quietly observe your thoughts - what do they say about you?
17. Practice changing your thoughts to be more in line with the person you want to be
18. Raise your heartbeat above rest at least once a day
19. Let go of labels and ideals, be the person you are not the label
20. Print, sculpt, scribble, write - create something every day to fulfil the need to create

21. When confronted with a situation stop and ask yourself what would the you of 30 years hence actually do
22. Focus on your breathing or heart rate several times each day and try to slow them down
23  Think before you say anything, ask yourself is it true, is it kind and if the answer is no then say nothing
24. See challenges as opportunities not as problems
25. Create a list of important short term goals, make an action plan for each one and then set a deadline to accomplish them.
26. See "bad" days as interesting ones instead
27. Do not strive for perfection, perfection equals paralysis.  Instead do the best you possibly can then look to improve on what you do
28. Memorise something every day
29. Constantly work to reducing your list of possessions and becoming a person of minimal needs - you will become much more content.
30. Develop an endless curiosity about our world, try new things and experience as many different sensations and environments as possible.  Let the world be your jungle and you the explorer.

Welcome to Under Blue Skies.  During the last week there has been quite a bit of questioning about the established beliefs I held and uncertainty about whether I was walking the correct path.  This video came about as a result of that deep thinking.

Deferred Post

Hello and  Good Morning from Ilfracombe

As a mark of respect to the people who suffered in the Grenfell Tower tragedy last week I have decided to defer the weekly blog update this week and replace it with a piece I have written and dedicated to the memory of those who perished and to those who survived that fateful night.

Hope Springs

From ashes of our former life
And like a phoenix in the night
Towards our future we will go
And rise above this great sorrow

For we are stronger than we know
And daily we will stronger grow
Within a world that pain will change
Where nothing like it comes again

Let no-one rest until the day
When people arm in arm will say
That Hope Springs forth beneath our feet
And sunlight shines on every street

We won’t forget that fateful night
And history books must tell it right
So people never will forget
The folk whose final days were met.

Let Hope spring forth and let them see
A world that cares in you and me
Those lives were given, not in vain!
And this can never be again

So You Want To Try Meditation?

Hi it’s Dave,

Greetings from Ilfracombe and welcome to the Under Blue Skies blog.  I am very excited with how everything is progressing. I find that sharing these pages with everyone goes a long way towards stimulating me to keep writing them.

For today’s piece I have been thinking that there could well be some of you who could benefit from an introduction to meditation..

So here is

So You Want to Try Meditation

The ultimate tip for any newcomer to the practice of meditation is allowing yourself to just be.

I do not place too much emphasis and rigid rules.  Meditation is something that is meant to help you centre yourself.

For some people, meditation consists of repeating powerful and meaningful mantras, whereas other people us it for opening or realigning their chakras in order to feel rooted and connected.

However for many more people meditation consists of sitting or lying still and saying or chanting AUM or OM eventually reaching enlightenment.

Meditation can be every one of the things on the list but it can also be none of them.

So for now let us make the assumption that you are approaching this for the first time, and let me identify some simple ways to help you begin your meditation practice. No pressure, no expectations.  In time I believe that you will learn to recognize meditation in its many forms.

1. Turn off your phone and limit distractions

Meditation is a very selfish but in time it helps you to become more selfless.  To begin a deep meditation, you have to focus on the very things you do regularly.

One simple trick is to breathe in counting to four, hold your breath for another count of four and release on the final count of four. Repeating this simple habit during meditation helps to calm your thoughts, and to keep you in the present moment it also  brings about a tremendous relaxation.

Personally I find that it is nigh on impossible to maintain the focus on my breath with the television blaring away in the background or with my phone buzzing with alerts and texts every few minutes. I suggest that you give yourself the time to breathe. Turning away from this distractions it is a safe bet that you will be able to find five minutes in your day to just sit and breathe.

2. Make yourself comfortable

A lot of meditative poses feel very uncomfortable.  So do not worry about where you place your hands or about sitting in the lotus position.

All you need to do is find a spot where you feel safe and at ease sitting or standing in   a position that you feel comfortable holding for at least five minutes.

You are spending time for yourself and whatever things you need for your comfort, such as pillows or a blanket etc should be sorted before you begin.

3. Find some soothing music

Often when you start out into meditation, the sudden silence is quite unsettling. That silence is in stark contrast to the rambling thoughts that are whirling around inside your head.  Take some time to find music that you will find soothing before you start your meditation.  Doing this will begin to help you relax which in turn will assist you when begin to focus on your breathing.

I personally find guided meditation very helpful because there are times when you want to meditate but you simply don’t know what to do or you focus your attention on whether you are doing it right.  A guided meditation lets you listen to the voice of your guide and thus allows your to fall into the meditation state.

4. Allow your thoughts to come and go

Many people believe that when you begin meditation you have to stop thinking.  However I disagree - simply following the first step above and focusing on your breathing, expressing silent gratitude for being able to inhale and exhale, your thoughts will inevitably slow down.

Let the thoughts flow, focus on everything, including the colours you see once your eyes are closed then slowly and gently let them go as if they are simply memories that will return to you again. Let go of all your judgments about everything, especially about whether you are doing this the right or wrong way, just focus on the positive and keep breathing.

5. Allow your emotions

Being connected to yourself often means allowing everything to flow through you with acceptance. Meditation will teach you to respect your many emotions and try to understand them.   There is not point in quickly trying to rationalize or avoid them. For example when you feel fear, it is no longer your mind judging you for being weak.  Meditation can turn that into an inquiry, to search for the root of the fear. Treating your emotions as being valid opens the way to greater self-love and patience and as you work through large and small issues alike it can assist in preventing them from reoccurring so frequently.

6. Practice meditation

Meditation is no different from any other exercise, the more you meditate, the easier it becomes and you will be to make it a habit.  I recommend that you start small using around five minutes a day and then as you begin to enjoy the calm that this practice bring, repeat it for another five minutes at night before bedtime.  In the early days it is a good idea to look to meditate at least three times per week.

7. Be Patient

There is an old saying the “even the wisest man starts with one wise thought”.   Each time you think that you have failed at a meditation, remind yourself that there is no failure:-  you paused, you breathed, you relaxed!   Some days you will be more distracted than on others and some days you might feel that your meditation is more fluid.   If you experience both of these states then congratulate yourself for sticking with it long enough to experience both type of days. Be patient and kind with yourself.

8. Practice Accountability

It might be a good idea to have a calendar or a meditation journal to jot down the days you’ve successfully completed your practice.  Keeping this diary can help to keep you motivated on the days where you might find meditating difficult. The journal is a great place for noting any of the pressing thoughts you either accepted or derailed during your meditation. As you practice meditation more often, you may find that you are able to make strong realizations that can help or guide you personally.

9. Forgive and Let Go

It is a lot easier to sit or lie in a relaxed position and go deep into yourself when are carrying no grudges or heavy emotions. As you make meditation a habit, it will become easier to let go of all the things that no longer serve you.  As you do this you will find that you are able to bring all of your energy, effort, will and heart into the present – where you belong.

10. Grateful meditation

If you find that you are too restless for the above style of meditation and that you just can not get to grips with sitting still, there is something else that you can do every day that is just as simple and beneficial.  Start with taking just a minute, and using a pen and a piece of paper write down three things you are grateful for.  Do not worry most people have to think hard in the beginning to think of three things to write down.

That moment of reflection and appreciation on the little things in life is meditation.

The hint of smile, either internally or externally, as you realize the things you’re grateful for today - is meditation!  Once you finish writing them down, put down your pen and hold on to the feeling for another minute and say “Thank you” to the universe, to yourself and to the present.

So as we reach the end of this week’s post I would like to thank you sincerely for taking the time to read the words.  I hope that you will find them useful as you move forwards in your daily life.

A useful selection of tips for Mindful Living

Hi it’s Dave,

Greetings from Ilfracombe and welcome to the Under Blue Skies blog.  I am very excited with how everything is progressing. I find that sharing these pages with everyone goes a long way towards stimulating me to keep writing them.

For today’s piece I have been considering several ways that we can live a more mindful life,  I have also taken inspiration from some colleagues who all say things like “you will never know how beautiful the world is until you stop, look and listen in the present moment

So here is

A useful selection of tips for Mindful Living

(photograph - Wytchwynd Photography)

For this piece I have created a collection of useful tips that anyone who wishes to live mindfully can put into practice..

So let us first examine the Components of Mindful Living

Mindfulness is about becoming an observer and looking at the present moment with no-judgemental awareness.

The next component is authenticity.  To accomplish this we must live from the heart and abandon unhealthy coping skills and banish Ego.

Next we must be in a state of openness. We must embrace all moments in life, constantly seeking personal truth and awareness

Intending – we must adopt a responsive and pro-active state.  We do not have to react or be on autopilot because once that happens we are no longer living mindfully.

Grace – it is necessary to accept the imperfect, we must accept unnecessary kindness towards us, we must work to become and then be Love in Action and we must practice forgiveness.

Remember that mindfulness is not a quick fix solution, it is a healthy lifestyle, a way to experience your journey, it is your life!!!

Mindfulness can be described as The Healthy Coping Skill and as such it takes the place of all self – destructing behaviours.

A wise gentleman once counselled me with the following phrase and I still relate to the words he said on that day “Always be aware that thoughts are things.  Be careful about what you think as your thoughts shape your life”

The effects of mindful thinking can be seen in all areas of our lives – Personal, Professional and Spiritual

On a Personal level mindfulness combats anxiety, reduces stress levels, helps effective weight lose, improves sleep, fights chronic pain and also lowers blood pressure.

On a Professional level mindfulness assists with clearer communication, improves our focus, increases our creativity, goes a long way to reduce burnout, helps develop leadership skills and mindful businesses enjoy higher customer service levels.

Spiritually mindfulness cultivates empathy, develops humility, builds gratitude, works to heal the soul, helps to let go of ego as I mentioned above.

And finally people have often asked me “How do I start?” and my answer is always the same, by becoming aware!!

You can – consider what you are about to say before you say it
You can – make gratitude a daily practice
You can – let go of any judgements that you might be carrying around
You can – be observant of the what is happening in the present moment
You can – engage all of your senses, sight, smell, hearing, touch
You can – focus on your breathing
You can – let go of expectations
And finally
You can – let go of the past and forgive people for their behaviours

So as we reach the end of this week’s post I would like to thank you sincerely for taking the time to read the words.  I hope that you will find them useful as you move forwards in your daily life.
