Timeline Therapy - An Introduction

 Timeline Therapy

Timeline Therapy (TLT) is a technique that I highly recommend!

This form of therapy allows you to (symbolically) go back into your past to issues that cause you to act in a self-limiting way, take the learnings, and move on by "dropping" the negative emotions.

I know that this sounds crazy, but from what I have read it really seems to work. However I will be doing some more research and then I will (if possible) write a more in-depth article soon, but in the meantime using these notes should help you to at least give it a try.

About Timeline Therapy

Generally speaking we tend to view and use a linear structure for time. People store and encode time differently – i.e. for some of us we imagine the future to be in front of us, for others it is to the side, or it could be above us.

Some people are “in time” and others are “through time”.

People who turn up on time, plan well, schedule events and carry diaries are “through time”. This is typically represented by a timeline going from left to right in front of them.

People who turn up late, are absorbed in the moment, and are not aware of the passing of time are “in time”. This is typically represented by a timeline flowing behind them to in front of them. (I'm very much "in time!")

When working with TLT, we should trust our UNCONSCIOUS to give us the right answer as to where our timeline is, and not put it where we “think” it should be consciously.

Step One – Elicit the Timeline

You can use the following script to find out how the person stores time.

Do this with the client awake – not in a trance – to increase unconscious trust and co-operation.

“If I were to ask your unconscious mind, where your past is, and where your future is, I have an idea that you might say, “it's from right to left, or front to back, or up to down, or in some direction from you in relation to your body.

It's not your unconscious concept that I'm interested in, it's your unconscious. So, if I were to ask your unconscious mind where is your past, which way would you point?”

And “what direction would you point if I asked your unconscious mind, where's your future?”

Step Two – First test of elicitation

Now, be aware of the directions that you pointed to. Do you notice that they imply a line?

If no: Could you notice that?

If still no: Is your past arranged by location, i.e. where you lived?

If yes: how would it look if, for the purposes of this exercise, it was stretched out in a line?

Now I will ask you to float up above the line. Can you just float up above your timeline and see it, or feel like it would feel to float up above your timeline?

Make sure you are looking through your own eyes, and are looking directly (or feeling) your timeline.

Now, remaining above your timeline just float back over the past. (pause). Are you there?

Good, now float back towards now and stop there

Are you there? Good.

Now keep facing towards the future, and float up higher and further back - over the past.

And now, float out above your future. Are you there?

Next, float up higher!

Float SO HIGH that it makes your timeline seem like it is an inch long.

Good, float back to now, and float down into the now and come back into the room.

NB - Be sure to run through this script many times BEFORE attempting any TLT – and always elicit the timeline first!

Step 3 – Discovering the Root Cause

We experience problems and negative emotions much more than we need to!

Emotions started at some point in your life. So if we can go to some point  before the first event and amend that, there can be a massive impact.

So, we need to go back to the original event.

How to experience a bit of the emotion now.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS UNCONSCIOUSLY! This process requires you to TRUST your unconscious mind AND follow the instructions. That's it!

1) Experience a memory of the negative emotion now (do this to light up the neurology)

Ask: Is it totally alright for your unconscious mind to release this (emotion / limiting decision / belief) today and for you to have a conscious experience that it is gone today?

2) Find the first event:

Ask your unconscious mind: what is the root cause of the problem, the first event which, when disconnected, will cause the problem to disappear?

If you were to know, was it before, during or after your birth?

If it was before?  Was it In the womb or before?

Womb? What month?

Before? Was it as past life or passed down to you genealogically?

Past life: How many lifetimes ago?

Genealogically: How many generations ago?

After: If you were to know, what age were you?

1) Just find your timeline, and float up above your timeline, and over the past, facing the past, until the event is down below you and in front of you and when you get there notice the event. Let me know when you're there.

2) Now, float directly up above the event so you are looking down on the event. Ask your unconscious mind what positive learnings do you need to take from the event, the learning of which will allow you to let go of the emotion easily and effortlessly. Next, ask your unconscious mind to preserve the learnings so that if you need them in the future, they'll be there. Let me know when you have the learnings.

3) Now, float back up above your TL, back over the past so you are high above the event and well before the event, and are looking towards now. Make sure you are well before any of the chain of events that led to that event/ And ask yourself, “now, where are the emotions? Have they gone? Have they all gone?

4) Float down inside the event so you are looking through your own eyes, and check on the emotions. Are they there? Or have they disappeared Now!! Good, go float back above the TL well before that event. (If some emotions remain: Ask your unconscious mind if there is an earlier event than this one? (And then repeat previous steps for that)

5) Now, come back to the now above your TL only as quickly as you can let go of all of the (name the emotion) on the events all the way back to now, follow the same steps and float above the TL well before the beginning of each event, preserve the learnings, and let go of the (emotion) all the way back to now. When done, float back into the now, and come back to the room.

6) Test: Can you remember any event in the past where you used to be able to feel the old emotion, and go back now and notice if you can feel it, or you may find that you cannot. How do you feel differently? Good, come back to the now.

7) Future place: I want you to go out to a time in the future which if it had happened in the past, you would have felt inappropriate or unwarranted (emotion), and notice if you can find that old emotion, or you may feel that you cannot. How do you feel differently?

OK? Good, come back to the now.

Take some time to settle down, always knowing that you are perfectly safe, perfectly secure and perfectly at peace.

perfectly safe, perfectly secure and perfectly at peace.

perfectly safe, perfectly secure and perfectly at peace.

DAve.

So What Is A Personal Development Consultant?

Photo by Drew Beamer on Unsplash

Hi, It's DAve

Thank you for joining me on today's post from

Altered Image Coaching.

So let's look at one of the most common questions I receive when people ask me about coaching, which is:-

"What Is That?"

So today I hope that I can go a long way towards answering that question.

There is a common misconception that life coaching and personal development coaching are the same thing but the reality is a little different.  Up to a point both a life coach and a  Personal Development consultant can take you to some of the same places because (in part) they do the same thing.  For example:-

Both can help you to:-

a) find things that bring you joy

b) see who you really are

c) create and define goals / then plan and reach them

d) be your best self

e) build confidence

However, in addition a Personal Development Consultant can assist you to:-

A) Develop Healthy Habits

B) Experiment with solutions and find your direction

C) Take forward action and they will hold you accountable

D) Become a better person

and more besides.

Personal Development places more focus on the following three points:-

skills / knowledge / attitude

So in essence you get the chance to have an impartial view (because it is all to easy to not see the wood for the trees).  In other words you get THE BIG VIEW!

Personal Development Coaching is very much about taking action and  moving forwards even when things are messy and not "perfect"!  It is the conscious process of improving and developing yourself.

A healthy relationship is based on mutual understanding and that is what a Personal Development Coach works towards:-

"bringing you to being yourself and providing a safe space for you to speak and be honest (which is linked to impartiality)".

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope that you have found it interesting.

Breaking The Chain.......

Breaking

          The

                        Chain

Hi and welcome to this week's blog post.

I have spent a lot of my working life following somebody else's rules and dictates often feeling that this was nothing like it was meant to be.

Many times I felt that I was a Square Peg in a Round Hole and that I did not fit in.

But before I go any further, let me give you a small insight into my background. My dad worked in a factory and having spent many evenings attending night School he qualified as a draftsman. in a relatively short space of time after his qualification the family moved lock stock and barrel the Cheshire where are dad took up a post as a Civil Servant. Eventually this post would lead him to become a qualified cost engineer.

My mum was a florist and she worked for a funeral director after which she ultimately became hairdresser. However for many years after we moved to Cheshire she was a middle class housewife bringing up her young family. as her family older mum decided that you wanted to go back to work you found a job caring for elderly people in a residential home.

As for myself I had successfully passed the 11-plus examination and had an accepted into Grammar School but even then I knew that there was so much more that life had to offer me and that I had plenty to offer to other people.

I discovered that I had a skill for helping people to see through the curtains of their life windows and to help them gain clarity in various situations.

However at this time my dream was to become a teacher. I felt that this was something that I could get my teeth into:-

For whatever reason I did not what achievement the results that I needed to get into college and thus the offer of a place was withdrawn.

During the following years I drifted through various career paths and eventually followed in my father's footsteps and became a civil servant, then after several months the contract expires and I found a position as a sales rep, then a bus driver and ultimately a coach driver.
However, life was to change yet again because I was not ultimately happy by any of the above career choices and so I followed my heart I booked onto a course and trained to become a coach. At the time this was the only formal training anyone could get for entry into Coaching.

Subsequently I took a diploma in life coaching and I trained as a counsellor after which I became a qualified music therapist. these qualifications gave me a lot of satisfaction when dealing with clients but did not provide the regular income I required as a family man and so I fell into to my next love - entertainment.

However, after 20-years of doing the same sort of things I really am feeling bored.

So lately I have been working around the concept of "Breaking The Chain" and how to do just that!

Because I have compiled several workbooks and other publications I am starting to feel that I really need to go back into Coaching and in such a way that I can combine it with the entertainment business that I also still love.

So although this is still a work in progress situation the die is well and truly cast - in the coming months I will be looking closely at my exit strategy from this corporate world and my entry strategy into the new (and hopefully more exciting one!) of a full time coach / therapist.

Thank you for reading this post that I hope you found of interest.

Please take the time to look below at the different ways you can get involved and I will look forward to speaking to you again soon

The Oak Seed Project - This month's topic is "Putting Yourself First"

Following last month's request for Project Ambassadors
I thought I would begin
as I mean to go on and invite readers
to comment on the following topic

PUTTING
         YOURSELF
                       FIRST!

If, like I did a number of years ago, you work in a job where you work long hours and where there can at times, be incredible pressures on you to get certain projects delivered within specific parameters such as client satisfaction, time constraints, budgetary limitations.

man sitting on chair using gray Toshiba ThinkPad

The more I worked the less happy I was with my job, I felt that I was swimming in treacle and that the rewards never matched the effort that I was putting in.  I was heading towards depression and my wife had noticed and finally said something to me about her concerns.

However I poo-pooed her comments at first, but as time went by I became more and more wrapped up in what I was doing and spent more time at the office than I ever did with her.

Eventually something hit me like bullet

 I HAD TO ESCAPE!!!

And so I quite literally ran for the hills!  While she was at work I wrote a short note telling her that I loved her, I packed a few things in a bag, picked up my guitar and drove off into the sunset looking for purple spaceships.

Those 2 nights were the worst nights of my life, I cried and drank, I cried again, I drank some more and eventually headed into a tear and alcohol fueled oblivion.

When I finally made my way home, I was very unsure of what the reception would be, but I knew that I had to face it if my marriage was to stand any chance of survival.

Hours and hours of talking followed and eventually the decision was reached that I would tender my resignation on the grounds that I was no longer able to cope with the stresses of that work environment.

And so that, as they say, was then and after a long crawl back to a better and happier life this is now!

I am older, maybe wiser (at least I hope I am) and much more together.  I am working as a coach / therapist, I have written and published several books and more besides.  All of this has come about because I took the decision (alongside and encouraged by my wife) to put myself first.

oooOOOooo

So now over to you - please comment below with your own stories so that we can start building the monthly discussions that The Oak Seed Project is going to be all about.

Here is the first of the "on topic" videos etc. for discussion during the month.

Have a fantastic month.
