How to be happier if you are doing a job you don’t love!

Hi I thought that for this week's post I would look at a few ways that you can be happier at work even though you might not really be “head over heels” in love with your job.

There are a few simple but meaningful steps that you can take to improve your working environment.

It does not necessarily follow that you hate your job but there could be room for improvement in the conditions of your everyday work.  In fact you could be one of the large number of people who actually think that their job is ok but that it could be improved by having things such as flexible hours and a little more freedom so that you are not tied to your desk for a full day.

It is perfectly possible to make your job far more satisfying if you put yourself into a situation where you are driving your own career.

Every organisation has its own reasons for being where it is and those reasons may not be particularly inspiring for you personally. So why not get clear about how and why your job is important to you.

Maybe you enjoy helping other people to solve their problems or maybe you are able to express your creativity.

If you are just there just for the money that too is fine, it still counts because you are supporting your family and maybe even your hobbies and those things are goals in themselves.

Whatever the reason is for your being employed at the place you work own it and then hopefully by using the above points you can make your job more meaningful to you.

Now let me ask you a question.

How do you define progress?

Happiness at work often depends on experiencing those small wins and often they matter more than the long-term milestones which are very often so far in the distance to make a difference. Start each day by setting two or three tasks that you can achieve and that would make the most difference to your day.  So when they are done you can actually celebrate with a break or some sort of a reward!

Another thing you can do is look after your workspace because however small it is it’s worth keeping tidy and the reason for that is that “Outer order contributes to inner calm”

A certain amount of autonomy is vital for your well-being in the workplace and so you could customise your immediate location to regain that control. If possible put some plants or some reminder of nature in your workspace (it could even be a photograph) and that can make a significant difference.

The first hour of the day is when you can focus on the most important work and then you are less likely to spend the day within a haze of distraction.  It is very tempting to believe that you can make unsatisfying work more pleasant by distracting yourself from it! The truth though is something quite different because the more proactive and focused you are the more you will feel that your day has been well spent.
