Today
I have learned a valuable lesson and I want to pass it on to you. That lesson is - your skin is not going to shrivel and die if someone throws a bit of
criticism in your direction.
You are stronger
than you think you are!
A
few weeks ago I was feeling quite impressed with myself, I had filmed and
edited a video for a friend of mine.
This
person used to live in Ilfracombe but had migrated to Australia some
years ago and was keen to see how Ilfracombe had changed over time.
I
was so pleased with the finished short film that I decided to put it into the
public domain via one of my Facebook pages.
Within
half an hour of me launching the video I began receiving messages from people I
know (and some that I don’t) saying “there’s more to this place than you showed
in that video!” and “what about so and so?” et cetera.
To
say that these comments hurt me deeply would be a bit of an over - exaggeration
but I did suffer from an element of shock at the level of criticism I was
receiving.
I
replied to some of the comments stating that the writers were not fully aware
of the whole concept and also that if they had refrained from being so quick to
judge, they would have realised that the video was only part 1 of a series of 3.
However,
because I was somewhat peeved by the comments and had descended into a fit of
pique, I removed the video from the group page.
Much
to the consternation of some of my regular viewers I advised that I had had
enough of this sort of behaviour and that I was “pulling the plug on future
broadcasts”
So
what had I done now? I had let the
opinion of those who had chosen to be vocal about my work become more important
than my own thoughts.
The
internal forces that drove me to spend hours making the video in the first
place, had been disregarded!
How crazy was
that?
However,
I put the whole affair to the back of my mind until today!
So
what changed is this -
I
had been reading a post by fellow blogger and manifestation expert Sarah Prout – www.sarahprout.com and in that post
she talked about exactly the same situation.
That is - letting other people’s opinions of you and your work become
more important than you own.
In
her post Sarah said:-
“You can’t feed your soul from collecting the approval
of others. It’s like an addiction to crack, or sugar, or like being stuck in an
endless game of Monopoly that you can never win”
Those words hit the spot and made me sit up and
take notice.
I got to thinking. She’s right! - what other people think of me
is no business of mine!
So from now forwards I intend to rise above “the
good opinions of others”; to make a fresh start and work to grow a thicker skin!
As for all those people who are the “party
poopers; the toxic, negative, sad sacks who can’t see the light” – I will be
sending them LOVE but I will not be trying to get their approval.
That ship has now set sail!
