4 Steps To Mindful Eating.

       MINDFUL

         EATING

When we are eating we are always making decisions and choices that go along with our "internal chatter"  Quite often we make choices that are not really suitable for our bodies and we find ourselves eating sugary and or junk food.

Whereas instead we could choose to practice intuitive eating or even take it a step further and began a practice of eating mindfully.  This practice can anchor us firmly in the present moment and enable us to hear our body's internal wisdom.

We can check in with our body and hear the messages it is sending to us such as:- I am hungry, I am full, I am thirsty and I am bloated.  All of these messages, our internal conversations, are vital to our wellbeing.

It is worth noting that there is not a one size that fits everyone guide because whatever works for me may not work for you, however you can tune into your body's wisdom and learn what it needs by eating intuitively

So now I will suggest a way of eating intuitively that you could adopt over the coming weeks and thus help create a more useful mind - body dialogue.

Step One

At your next meal sit in a quiet place with no distractions and look carefully at the food in front of you.  See the various colours and shapes, then close your eyes and take in the smell of the foods.  Make mental notes of what is happening within your body, is your mouth watering, what are you thinking, are you keen to get started but for the moment do nothing just notice. ]

Step Two

Take the first bite and focus on the texture and the temperature.  Note how the food and the cutlery feel inside your mouth, then focus on the taste of the foods and continue to eat there rest of your meal in the same way.  See if you can tune in to all of the messages that your body is sending to you, are you experiencing any physical sensations in you mouth or your stomach.

Step Three

After you have finished eating take time to close your eyes and tune in to your body again.  How are you feeling, what are the sensations in your body, do you feel sleepy or do you feel energised?  Are you full or do you want to eat more, and notice if there is any difference between what your mind is telling you and what your body is saying.

Step Four

Ask yourself, how did this meal serve me, how do I feel.  Do these feelings differ with various types of meals and foods.  for example what does a meal made with fresh ingredients taste like compared to a processed snack.

Notice all of the varying messages coming from your body and compare them to those arising in your mind.

A little note for you.

Do not worry if it is hard to tune into your body's messages because we are so used to hearing the mind's chatter.  However the more we practice this the easier it will become and over time we learn which foods will nourish us and which habits harbour negative effects.  You will probably find in time you are able to diagnose food intolerances that you have previously ignored.
