Hi and thanks for
joining me here on the Under Blue Skies blog.
This week I thought it might be of interest to everyone if I were to
suggest a way that would enable you to carry out a Life Audit
I am sure that there are many times in your life
where you feel it is all a bit too much, things get on top of you, the to-do
list gets longer and your diary is groaning under the strain of everything you
need to do. But, when you sit back and
review your day (or week) you feel that you have not done very much at
all.
Maybe this is the time to take a look at your life
and do a Life Audit.
We
can all have days when we do far too much of all the wrong things but the task
is to make sure that those days do not become weeks, months or even years. I have posted a few tips that if used
correctly, will give you the clarity that you need to be on top of the right
things at the correct time.
Know your mission and
vision
If
you don’t know what your personal mission and vision are then no matter what advice
other people give you if will not be helpful.
You need to gain absolute clarity on What your why is, your vision.
Write
down your personal mission and identify your goals by writing them down on
paper. Now I say paper because they
always seem to be more permanent when you write things instead of making
digital notes.
Plus
writing a personal Mission Statement helps you to articulate your personal
definition of success, your beliefs and your values
The
following question will be useful in helping you to drill down to the really
important stuff and as you complete the answers always keep your Mission
Statement in mind.
What am I currently
doing?
Include
everything that takes up your time and should include your full time job,
relationships, social media, community work, side businesses (hustles) and
anything else that you spend time doing.
When
you have completed the list compare it to your Mission Statement and note any
points that are congruent. Having done
that look at the non congruent remains and you could reduce or even eliminate
them from your activities.
To
help here are some questions that you could ask about each of the activities
you are working on:-
How
is this helping me to achieve my mission?
Is
it something that I enjoy?
What
am I gaining from having (or doing) this and could I achieve those benefits in
some other way?
What
would I lose if I gave up doing this? Is
it significant to reaching my mission?
Is
doing this using other resources that might be useful in helping me reach my
why?
If
the answer is yes it might be better getting rid of it to make way for doing
things that will help achieve you bigger mission.
If
I was not already doing this would I sign up to it now (if the answer is “no”
get rid of it)
Is
this helping me fulfil the basic needs of my life? (can I find an alternative option that will
provide the same benefits to me without the same financial or time
commitments).
Something
that you can use as a tool to help you with the above is the “Stoplight Method”
which I will explain next:-
RED: STOP! These are things that you
should say no to at
this time.
YELLOW: Slow Down! – You can still be involved, but maybe pull back a little from it. This is a commitment that you can redesign.
YELLOW: Slow Down! – You can still be involved, but maybe pull back a little from it. This is a commitment that you can redesign.
GREEN: GO! – This is mission-congruent and a
life must-have.
And finally
Look at what
remains on your list. If these things
are more manageable and the points lead you directly towards your Mission
Statement you will know that your Life Audit has been successful. However, if they do not lead you in that
direction then go over the points again in far greater detail.
Your life
audit may also help you to identify areas where you can add new opportunities
that allow with your goals.
Your Mission
Statement provides the focus of your life and if you are presented with new
opportunities you can run them through your “mission filter”. Check back and review you progress every few
months to help you tweak and re-align yourself and ensure that you are still
“on track” towards your definition of Personal
Success.
