Hi
and welcome to the Under Blue Skies blog.
It
is a sad indictment of life in the 21st Century when it becomes
valid to write a post of this nature, but sadly it is true that people are often
viewed as being “Toxic”. In fact a whole
generation has been growing up believing that of other people.
The definition of “toxic” in The Oxford
English “Living” Dictionary reads
“Toxic
= Very bad, unpleasant, or harmful”.
Using
that as a starting point I have listed a number of habits that you
can cultivate to ensure that your personality is less likely to appear “Toxic”.
Accept Yourself – accept yourself as
you are and stop trying to be something or someone you are not. There is always room to change but make sure
those changes are for the better.
Eliminate Doubt – this goes hand in had
with self acceptance. You are capable,
good enough, strong willed you just have to believe in who you are and stop
making comparisons
Make Every Day A Spa Day – ladies how much
pleasure can you get from a bit of personal care? You know the thing sauna, massage and so
on. Well the good news these things are
becoming more and more available, with minor additions your bath tub can become
as good as any spa. You can also buy portable
foot spas plus there are many massage practitioners who can give you treatments
at home.
Not
forgetting the men – you can also benefit from such treatments, in fact, I know
some men who pamper themselves more than women and guess what guys? I have it on good authority that they feel
great afterwards!
Become More Creative – using your creativity
can actually decrease those bad vibes coursing through your body. Painting can be both relaxing and
therapeutic, playing a musical instrument or even just listening to certain
styles of music can bring about changes of state from anger to calm, from
agitated to relax.
Have a Good Cup of Tea
or Coffee
- There is nothing so good for calming you down if you are getting stressed as
a “nice cup of tea or coffee”. Take 5
minutes or so, sit quietly with a warm “cuppa” and let the stress just drift
away.
Be Grateful For Your
Friends
– Your friends are valuable, between you can create new memories and have
fun. Friends rally round you when you
are down and they will help you in an emergency. Showing that you care by making time for them
goes a long way to reducing “toxic”
Be confident and show it! – but beware of
arrogance! Confidence is a wonderful
quality and can often be something that others admire.
Tune into You! – listen to what you
are saying and if it is “toxic” get rid of it.
Getting rid of the noise and being more gentle with what you say and how
you say it can work wonders.
Constructive not
Destructive Criticism
– if you have to make a complaint about someone or something do it in a
constructive way and use it as an opportunity to teach so that everyone
benefits.
Communicate – writing letters,
sending little thank you notes or even picking up the phone for a chat is far
far better than the sterile world of email and text message. A hand written letter can convey a stong
message that you do care about the person to whom you are writing.
Look after your body and
make something of yourself – now this is one I am still working on. I work to eat healthily and take more
exercise in order to look after myself but I still sometimes give way to
temptation!
And
lastly
Give up the chats by the
water cooler!
– these infernal machines are a breeding ground for toxic conversations. Please avoid them like the plague.
So
as we draw this piece to an end I will just add that I understand that it is
very easy to be drawn into toxic ways, but with a little work and determination
you can break free and become a person that people admire, sometimes envy, and
often respect.
Best
Wishes
