Slow Down and Do More!
How many of us are addicted
to the convenience of 24 hour on-line shopping with the world’s biggest on-line
retailers (especially one named after a great river), of not having to travel, or
having bags to lug about, and having everything delivered to our doorstep via
the click of a button?
I have heard it said that recently
someone was wandering down their local High Street and they almost had to stop
and think about the process of shopping and what they were supposed to do. This same person also reported that the last
time they went into a shop and just “browsed” was so long ago that they could
not really remember what to do. They
said that it felt as if they were lost in an “alien environment”!
It is my belief that no
matter how convenient online buying is, it simply cannot replace the experience
of running your hands over an object, picking it up and feeling its physical
form.
Online shopping cannot
replicate the experience of trying a tester of an aftershave or a perfume, it
cannot reproduce how it feels to try on a jacket, a pair of trousers or a pair
of shoes.
Sadly the days of such
experiences in the High Street stores are (at present) numbered. Long gone are the hustle and bustle of the
crowded Saturday afternoon streets and the smells emanating from the shops, with
their disappearance we have all but lost the noises of the people going about
their weekend business.
Recently in the seaside town
where I live in North Devon , I counted as many
as 36 empty shops on the High Street all of these had been fully occupied by
once thriving businesses. The other week I was also surprised to see that a
major brand cooked chicken restaurant had closed on another High Street.
During my research recently
I have found that former and current shopkeepers are all saying similar things ...that
the act of shopping is a dying affair. ”It has been disrupted!” as one put it.
Living in this modern world
of the 21st Century has created a situation where we prioritise
convenience and price and although that is not always a bad thing. There is a danger thought that if the move
into onllne shopping goes too far we are in danger of losing a lot more of
life’s staples – such as good manners, patience, tolerance and what would a
world without those be like?
Another aspect of daily living
that has been lost (in the world of today) is the skill of being able to travel
anywhere in the country without resorting to the use of a motorway. This is an alien concept to many people, as
is the fact that you can get around this country (often quicker if you don’t
use the motorway network) without using a SatNav.
There is something quite
refreshing about planning a route between point A and point B and reading the
road signs as you make the journey along the highways and byways of this
island.
Oftentimes you will stumble
upon a variety of places along the way and thus discover the unexpected joys of
tiny villages, picturesque country towns and not to mention farm shops selling fresh local produce such as warm new
laid eggs, freshly dug potatoes or fruit straight off the tree.
Heaven forbid that you may
be tempted to stop and explore further, but I ask you to answer me this
question:-
”in all honesty can you buy
any of these things or experiences on line?”
So please don’t get me wrong
there are times when convenience is just that convenient BUT…….
I implore you to slow down and do more!
Consider whether or not it
might be better to get out from behind your desk, off the sofa, out of your
bedroom and go out into the big wide world of the shop and walk around
(exercise is a bonus that comes out of going shopping).
You never know, you might
just find something that is not sterile but which contains far more goodness
than can ever be delivered to you in a cardboard box, by a drone or even a late
night taxi.
And don’t get me started about the long
forgotten art of conversation….
