Create Some "Me" Time!
Only a handful of people would disagree with me when I say that “it is vital that we take time for ourselves!”
However when I say, “we
should try to do this at some part of every day”, it is very likely that a lot
more will say things like “but I have this to do……” or “yes that’s all very
fine but you aren’t juggling a career and children!”
If finding a chunk of time
for yourself is really that impossible then at least make some space for restoring yourself and for relaxation once a week
because doing so will make you happier, more able to cope and more effective at
doing the things you need to both at work and at home.
I know that there are some
people (who might be reading this post) who feel that they don’t deserve to
take time for themselves because they see it as being selfish or lazy. For
other people it might simply be that the pace of 21st Century living
make it seem impossible for them to take a break and put their feet up.
For your own health it is
vital that you find time and if you can’t you really need to MAKE time by
shifting things around, bringing someone in to assist you
DON’T WAIT UNTIL “THE RIGHT TIME”
I know that it is does not
feel good to have things left undone, tasks not completed because they simply nag away in your mind,
and so you tell yourself that you will relax and unwind when you have
everything in its place and things are under control.
Realistically you and I both
know deep down that because there are multiple to do list items both at work
and at home the truth is that the right time is going to be a long time
coming. It is very likely that it will
never be The Right Time!
So it becomes important to
switch off for a while and ignore the messy living room, the growing mountain
of emails and the like and other “stuff”.
Those things will all be there after you have had the break.
Now if you are going to take
some “me time” then it has to be spent doing something that you enjoy – it
would be pointless riding the exercise bike if you don’t really enjoy riding
that bike because then you would get to hate it and it would become another
chore.
The chances are if you are
anything like me you will have an inbuilt dislike of being told what to do so
if you keep telling yourself you have to do this (exercise bike) or that
(swimming) it will take on negative connotations and you will stop sooner or
later.
SOMETHING YOU REALLY ENJOY DOING!
It is vital that some part
of every week is taken up with something that you really enjoy doing!
You could arrange for a
theatre night one week, a dinner with friends another so that you create a
social calendar of things that you really enjoy.
The spin off from this is
that as you make more slots for doing things you want, you will find that
people will tend to be more understanding if you say “I can’t do that because I
have tickets for the theatre then” rather than “well I was just going home to
play on the games console.”
THE FEEL GOOD FACTOR!
Notice those good feelings
and make them count. When you do notice
them spend about 30 seconds paying attention to those feelings of
pleasure. It is very likely that by
doing this you will notice that the number of times they happen will
increase.
You will probably also
notice that your memory has more details about the event than you have been
used to having and the spin off from that is that you will start to feel that
you have had more time to yourself!
