Stop, Continue, Start

Hi

This week, life has been in a bit of turmoil - road accidents (not me but someone close), a few issues at the office that needed my input and the situation with someone really close have all left their mark and impacted on my forward preparation for this week's blog.

So I decided that I would look at a collection of posts that I wrote way back in 2009 for some inspiration and something that jumped out at me was a subject that really got me thinking.

We all have things that we should STOP

We all have things that we should CONTINUE

and

We all have things that we should START

With that said here is my list of things that I feel we could all benefit from a firm

STOP

We all have habits some of which are good and others are bad - consider yours and make a couple of lists and when that is done make a point of taking steps to get rid of the "bad" ones.

examples are:-

Living life on the phone / spending time on Social Media

So - unfollow people that don't serve your best interests.  Set yourself time limits or establish set times for the use of Social Media.

Stop snoozing the alarm

When it goes off count backwards 5,4,3,2,1 and then get up.

Drinking every weekend (or evening in some cases)

High alcohol consumption is very expensive, not good for mental health.  Introduce a weekly drink limit and introduce non - drinkers into your life.

Stop Unintentional Shopping

You us most likely find that if you shop ethically and thrift shops more often you will ultimately have more money in your pocket, purse or bank account.

Stop saying "sorry" too much

Take note of how often you apologise and accept responsibility for things that are not your fault.  Resolve to give it up and become more mindful of your words

Stop being permanently busy

Look at your priorities, cut down on some of the mental clutter (you might find that you do more)  Consider doing some "off the clock deep personal work"

Stop comparing yourself

Again Social Media is one of the big culprits for this, be aware of these "highlight wheels" that cause you to compare yourself to other people portrayals - the fact is that a lot of these are unreal.  How many times have you seen the smartly dressed 20 something with the ROLEX / TaG watch, the Lambo or Ferrari.  The chances are they are borrowed and the photo / story
are fakes.

True compliments are effective comparison reduction tools.

CONTINUE

Identify things that you are doing that bring joy into your life, things that help you to progress towards a better version of yourself.  If you know that something you are doing is of benefit to you then you should carry on doing it.

Additionally, if you are bringing joy into some else's life you are really enriching your own life and that is something that you should really continue doing!

START

Now let us consider things that you could start that will have a positive effect on your daily life.

This is anything that contributes to your personal development and betterment and could include any or all of the following:-

A Regular Exercise Routine / Joining A Gym

Swimming

Walking instead of using the car or bus

Saving a set amount of money each week into a bank account

Meditation - can be extremely therapeutic

Journalling

So now that you have a list of ideas and you probably will have come up with some of your own, why not drop me a quick email to let me know what you things you had going on that you have stopped, what you are continuing and what you will be starting.

Make it specific, measurable and time bound

For example:- I will begin saving £10 a week, every week over the next year and 12 months from today I will have £520 extra in my bank account!

A Fresh Look At The Wheel Of Life

Hi everyone, it's Dave and I would like to welcome you to this week's blog.

As part of my "getting back to what matters" process I have taken a look at some of the tools I used to recommend to my clients and one of them was something called "The Wheel of Life" that I included in some of my early workbooks.

I now  believe that in 2020 / 21 this will prove to be a valuable tool for bringing some semblance of order and direction into our lives and it will help us to focus on areas of our life where we can make improvements.

The wheel is broken into 8 segments and this allows you to see how you stand and where you can make improvements.  I recommend that you focus on only one segment at a time rather than trying to handle all 8 areas at once.

So that said, let us look a the different areas that make up the wheel - the order they are placed in is quite important.

The main areas are as follows:-

Home        Family        Work        Friends        Wellbeing        Relationships

Adventure        Money

and so we need to establish a base line for each area.  This will give a point from which we can move forwards.  To do this rate each area a score of between 1 and 10 where 1 is the lowest (it really sucks) and 10 is the highest (it can't get and better than this).

Once you have done this then take your lowest scoring segment and work to increase its score by a total of 3 points during the next 4 weeks.  These baby steps are vital and you will need to do some real thinking to determine ways that you can raise the level by just 1 point per week.

When you find that you have managed to raise the point level for that segment then move on to the next lowest scoring segment and see if you can raise that one by the same amount.

You can, if you have the time, work on more than one section at a time but the aim is to go back to it often and consider what actions you can take to raise the scores.

If you feel it would help you then you could also consider if there is someone you know to who would hold you to account and spur you on to do this work.

So what remains now is to wish you "Good Luck" and say that I hope you are soon hitting 10s all around the wheel.

The Cup Of Tea (Strategy Planning Your Progress)

The Cup Of Tea

Hi and thank you for joining me today as we explore something that could, for some people, be a new and radical strategy / approach to goal setting

All too often we set personal goals but we do not really create a plan of how we aim to achieve the goal or challenge. So I have given this matter some serious thought and I have decided that to achieve the required motivation it is necessary to look at the object or state that we want to achieve. To put it another way we have to “start at the end” to achieve success.

Having done this we move on to the
Next Step

In this part of the process we need to list everything that has to happen for to achieve (or realise) this goal.   It is all very well to have the goal in mind but unless we know the steps to take we are at a great disadvantage.

So that said, it is useful make a note of all your answers no matter how ridiculous you think they are. They can be as crazy or as far-fetched as you like because they are all useful!

But, instead of theorising let us take a look at a practical example.

The example that I have chosen provides an illustration of how to make a cup of tea.

So if we illustrate (or picture) the cup of tea that is to be the finished article then using the approach that we have outlined we well see that stepping backwards we will require a teapot and we will also need a kettle (to boil the water) we will also  need a cup and saucer and we will need the tea.

We will also need an amount of milk, some sugar, water (for the kettle) power to provide the heat to boil the water.

A third thought string will us that we will need teabags, plus maybe a tea strainer and this will involve shopping and paying the bill

And the final fourth string shows us that we need will electricity, so if that is the case, then it might be that we will have to put coins into a meter and finally we will also need to plug the kettle in.

So you can see, by using this method you are guided to think about all of the steps involved in reaching your goal, rather than just setting a long-term "off in the distance" goal and then not having a clue about how you are going to get there.

If you don’t have a plan then you may end up in totally the wrong place.

This piece forms part of my success progress development concept.

7 Tips For Success

                 7 Tips For Success

Hi it's Dave

In keeping with the new direction of Altered Image Coaching I have decided that this week I am going to share a few ideas that I have found useful in helping clients to work towards their success (and be contented along the way).

So let us jump right in and go for it:-

1    Don't think that abstaining from food is the opposite of being greedy!  It is not!  In fact the opposite is found in the knowledge of how to recognise being content with what you have eaten.

2    Passion is contagious!  People find themselves being naturally drawn to someone who is passionate about their work, or their life.  It is often the case that they cannot take their eyes off them and eventually they will do what the other person is doing .

3    Adversity provides an opportunity to experience growth. When people are faced with a struggle to reduce the challenges they face in life they are actually building their endurance muscles and they will (without thinking about it) be fine tuning their talents

4    Don't wait for happiness! Live and enjoy the moment.  Instead of postponing the joy until you have reached the end of the project, celebrate all the little victories along the journey.

5    Remember that it is ok to make mistakes!  Making errors and then learning from the mistakes is the path to growth and successfully moving forwards

6    As you grow you will receive attention! Do not deliberately go in search of attention from other people.  It is a fact that as you develop you skills and talents attention arrive automatically.

7    Take time to reflect!  By doing this you are able to see how other people have contributed to the success of your project.  Expressing gratitude for those contributions will help pave the way for move success.

So hopefully those few short tips will get you thinking about how you work and then making a few little adjustments to your route will bring you to success and the discovery of contentment.

All of which will prove wonderful!
