How
often do you find yourself heading off on a new project with all guns blazing
and full of great intent, only to find that a few days or weeks down the line
you have suddenly been overtaken by a new interesting topic?
You
then switch your allegiance to this new one saying something along the lines
of:-
“It
won’t hurt if I just do “Y” for a few days – I can always go back and pick up
“X”. A few days won’t matter!”
Welcome to the Under Blue Skies blog.
I
know I have been in that place so many times and I get so angry with myself for
allowing it to happen.
If
you are like I was you will probably find that when you do get back to “X” you
find all too often the original impetus that got you started in the first place
has evaporated and then good old “X” joins the pile of the “I’ll get round to
finishing that when I get the inspiration back!”
It
rarely happens that those projects get completed.
Now
there is help around in the way of a few short tips which, if followed
faithfully should see you finishing more of what you start. So let’s get started with the list
Tip 1 – Connect with
your vision.
Build
a picture of your vision see it big, bold and beautiful, how it will look once
it is finished and when you have that image into your head, lock it into you
mind (In next week’s blog I will give you a cool way to lock things into your
mind and explain how you can recall them easily and quickly)
Tip 2 - Make a
commitment and stick to it.
It
is always worth making a promise to yourself that you are going to do a certain
amount of work on the project at a specific time and hold yourself to your word
Tip 3 – Keep track of
your progress.
A
useful tool is a journal notebook (online or physical). Whenever I start a new project I open up a
new page in my journal book and move forwards from that point documenting my
progress each day. If I have completed a
the next post for the blog or book I am writing my entry would be something along
the lines of
J today is the 25th June 2018
and I have just completed the latest post for my UBSkies blog called “How To Finish What You Start”
Seeing
that sort of thing written in your personal journal give you a good feeling
inside and most likely prompts you to get on and do the next one.
Tip 4 – Celebrate what
you have done to date
This
tip follows on nicely from Tip 3, take a look at what you have achieved so far
in the project and give yourself a “pat on the back”. Again the feel good factor will kick in and
spur you on.
Tip 5 – Go back to your
vision
Take
a step back and see how the project will look when it is completed – this is
what you are working towards. Take a
look a just how far you have come along that road.
Tip 6 – Enjoy what you
are doing
If
the enjoyment stops – you must stop!
Tip 7 – Don’t be a
perfectionist
In
some of my early writings I used to spend ages making certain that every “i”
was dotted and every “t” was crossed and that used to cost me time every single
week. More often than not I was late
posting and then I discovered a blogger called “Lavendaire” and one of her
favourite phrases is “Done is better
than perfect” and now that is a maxim that is in place with me for the
foreseeable future”
Tip 8 – Work out what
you will need (materials, resources etc.)
If
you know that you are going to require a certain number of photographs for the
work you are undertaking then you can either book the services of a
photographer or make time to shoot the images yourself. Do you need paper, pens etc? Do you need graphic designs doing? What costs implications are there?
Prior preparation
prevents poor performance
Tip 9 – Time plan
Work
out an estimate of the time (and any financial implications) it will take to
complete your project and at least this will give you a basic guide line to
follow.
And
finally
Tip 10 – Don’t do it
just to do it
Make
sure that you are selective in what you do.
Only undertake a project if it concerns something that you are
passionate about – that way it won’t feel like work at all, it will be
enjoyment not drudgery.
I
sincerely hope that you find this post useful and look forward to hearing from
you do so. To do that all you have to do
is put a comment in the box below and I will read it.
Best
Wishes
