             Music?


Hi Everyone I'm Dave B and thank you for joining me here for this week's blog.


It is possible that I might have mentioned this before in one of my previous posts but that said it is something that I am passionate about:-

MUSIC in its' many forms and styles.

Have you ever wondered why it is that music can be so evocative?

It is true that we only need to put on a piece of music and within a few moments a shift happens and we can soon find ourself somewhere totally different, for some it could be Paris, for some it could be in the middle of a field with a loved one.  For others it could be in the heart of a fairground......

No matter where it takes us, simply sitting and listening for just a few minutes can dissolve all the stresses and strains of every day life and there is no need to move anywhere.

This was brought home to me when I saw a comment that a friend had posted online.  She said that had been listening to piece of music and with just 5 minutes she was:-

"fully relaxed and recharged!"

It was this realisation that prompted me to study for a Music Therapy Diploma and then, once qualified to become a music therapist.

Music has the power to calm the furrowed brow, and a formidable quote from Hans Christian Andersen say it all for me.  He said

"Where words fail, music speaks!"

I whole-heartedly believe that music has no need of language it speaks through emotions.

So next time you feel pressured, stressed, or in need of relaxation instead of turning to questionable substances put on some music, close your eyes and let your imagination take you on a journey of discovery, 

You never know, you might enjoy it!

Such is the power of music!

31/08/22 A Much Needed Break

Hi everyone I have to admit that following the last couple of years we (Alison and I) are very much in need of a proper holiday and as such we, and a friend, are taking a couple of week's away.  This means a break from the internet as much as anything else and doing things and visiting places just for US!

I know this probably sounds mega selfish but when you consider that during that time Alison had suffered a particularly painful hip problem that eventually resulted in her having to give up work and (ultimately) have an operation to replace said hip followed by the recuperation process.  As a result 2 years is a very long time without a proper break.

That said, please be assured that the break is only temporary and the regular posts will return on or about the 21st September at which time I will look forward to seeing you again.

In the meantime there may be a few random short posts just to keep things from stagnating completely - but I cannot say that will definitely be the case.

So I look forward to catching up with you when I return in a couple of weeks or so.

I don't think that there are many people who would disagree with me when I say that it is crucial to make time for yourself.

If you create time for enjoyment and restoration every day it is a win-win situation because it will make you happier and more effective in doing the things that you have to do both at work and at home.

However, it rarely happens because somewhere, deep inside us, we feel that we don’t deserve it or we believe that we have such a busy life it seems impossible to hit the pause button.

You actually need to "take a moment to yourself to enable you to get a moment to yourself!"

You really don’t need to wait until it feels right to take this time, even though it may feel that you have unfinished tasks and it will feel unpleasant not to do them.   You will only find pleasure if you learn to tolerate the discomfort of leaving them alone for the time being.

For instance:-  don’t worry unnecessarily if your email inbox gets full or if the bedroom still has unmade beds or the living room is a tip.

Just switch off and take time out!

It is all too easy to just put things into your “me time” because you think you should enjoy them and if you do genuinely enjoy them they are perfect

But that said, if you don’t enjoy them you will only become resentful and you will eventually rebel against doing them.

Always make sure that the part of your week when you spend time doing something for yourself consists of doing things that you enjoy just for themselves.

Because when you do find that you get some time that is set to be enjoyable just take a little tip and really make it count. Because when you realise that you are enjoying yourself it is surprising how much benefit taking even just half a minute and paying attention to your pleasure feelings will provide.

It is possible that taking those minutes to yourself will become part of your memory and as such they will help you to feel like you had even more time to yourself.

So, make a commitment to yourself and if you’ve bought tickets for something and made plans to be with a friend then do it!

I guarantee that time dedicated to your and your pleasure will be more beneficial than and time spent  mindlessly surfing social media or slobbing in front of the TV.
