Run Free!

This week's post is about
                                 "running free".

So many of us are so tied to our "work" or our "home" etc. that we do not know what it is like to be totally free!

We have no idea how it feels to observe the beauty of the night sky, to stand in the middle of a rain shower or to be breathing the rarified air on the top of a distant hill.  Any yet, these are only a few of the beautiful things that we could (and should) experience as we pass through this life.

A number of years ago I had the chance to experience freedom and it was one of the most amazing times of my life - but I have to say that I did miss the "creature comforts" of home and although that was a bit of a problem I would not swap that experience for anything.

I was reminded of this experience by a story I read recently.  It is a story about a little girl whose family took her to an adventure park and there she saw a horse that was living its' day to day life giving rides to children.  The horse was well cared for and to all intents and purposes it wanted for nothing.

It dutifully carried the children around the farm every day but the girl wondered what it thought about!

Did it dream of escaping one day and running perfectly free or did it simply accept that life was the way it was and that was how it was meant to be?

Neither she, nor anyone else would ever know what thoughts went through that horse's mind, but one day as the park was closing someone carelessly left the gate open....... and

The horse escaped!

It galloped over the fields with the wind blowing through its mane.  Eventually it came upon a river and stopped to take a drink and then it realised it was hungry but did not know what it was going to do for food.  The horse knew nothing about fending for itself so it just carried on walking and eventually it happened upon a farmyard.  The air was thick with the smell of newly cut grass and the horse followed the aroma, eventually finding the storage area the horse began to eat its fill.

"How lovely" it thought as it ate but there were other thoughts running through its mind as well, one being the warm comfy stable that it had at the park, all the children that it enjoyed being around every day.

In that moment the horse decided to make the journey back to the park, to be greeted by the owners.  It was led to the stable and bedded down for the night.

After a comfortable night's sleep the horse was taken to a huge field where there were several other horses.

It seems that the owner had experienced a realisation!  He had realised that horses were much like human beings, they needed their freedom, they needed to be able to wander and roam with others of their own kind.

He now understood that he had been misguided and that he had really been unkind to the horse over the years, it needed to have the freedom to do it's own thing and also it needed to have and experience the companionship of others.

It is my belief that as humans we also need the same things!

We need to experience our freedom, to be able to move around and to mix with like minded people - we need to be able to travel and to return home as and when we feel the need.

Only this way can we live the lives that we were truly destined to live.

Stop, Continue, Start

Hi

This week, life has been in a bit of turmoil - road accidents (not me but someone close), a few issues at the office that needed my input and the situation with someone really close have all left their mark and impacted on my forward preparation for this week's blog.

So I decided that I would look at a collection of posts that I wrote way back in 2009 for some inspiration and something that jumped out at me was a subject that really got me thinking.

We all have things that we should STOP

We all have things that we should CONTINUE

and

We all have things that we should START

With that said here is my list of things that I feel we could all benefit from a firm

STOP

We all have habits some of which are good and others are bad - consider yours and make a couple of lists and when that is done make a point of taking steps to get rid of the "bad" ones.

examples are:-

Living life on the phone / spending time on Social Media

So - unfollow people that don't serve your best interests.  Set yourself time limits or establish set times for the use of Social Media.

Stop snoozing the alarm

When it goes off count backwards 5,4,3,2,1 and then get up.

Drinking every weekend (or evening in some cases)

High alcohol consumption is very expensive, not good for mental health.  Introduce a weekly drink limit and introduce non - drinkers into your life.

Stop Unintentional Shopping

You us most likely find that if you shop ethically and thrift shops more often you will ultimately have more money in your pocket, purse or bank account.

Stop saying "sorry" too much

Take note of how often you apologise and accept responsibility for things that are not your fault.  Resolve to give it up and become more mindful of your words

Stop being permanently busy

Look at your priorities, cut down on some of the mental clutter (you might find that you do more)  Consider doing some "off the clock deep personal work"

Stop comparing yourself

Again Social Media is one of the big culprits for this, be aware of these "highlight wheels" that cause you to compare yourself to other people portrayals - the fact is that a lot of these are unreal.  How many times have you seen the smartly dressed 20 something with the ROLEX / TaG watch, the Lambo or Ferrari.  The chances are they are borrowed and the photo / story
are fakes.

True compliments are effective comparison reduction tools.

CONTINUE

Identify things that you are doing that bring joy into your life, things that help you to progress towards a better version of yourself.  If you know that something you are doing is of benefit to you then you should carry on doing it.

Additionally, if you are bringing joy into some else's life you are really enriching your own life and that is something that you should really continue doing!

START

Now let us consider things that you could start that will have a positive effect on your daily life.

This is anything that contributes to your personal development and betterment and could include any or all of the following:-

A Regular Exercise Routine / Joining A Gym

Swimming

Walking instead of using the car or bus

Saving a set amount of money each week into a bank account

Meditation - can be extremely therapeutic

Journalling

So now that you have a list of ideas and you probably will have come up with some of your own, why not drop me a quick email to let me know what you things you had going on that you have stopped, what you are continuing and what you will be starting.

Make it specific, measurable and time bound

For example:- I will begin saving £10 a week, every week over the next year and 12 months from today I will have £520 extra in my bank account!

A Fresh Look At The Wheel Of Life

Hi everyone, it's Dave and I would like to welcome you to this week's blog.

As part of my "getting back to what matters" process I have taken a look at some of the tools I used to recommend to my clients and one of them was something called "The Wheel of Life" that I included in some of my early workbooks.

I now  believe that in 2020 / 21 this will prove to be a valuable tool for bringing some semblance of order and direction into our lives and it will help us to focus on areas of our life where we can make improvements.

The wheel is broken into 8 segments and this allows you to see how you stand and where you can make improvements.  I recommend that you focus on only one segment at a time rather than trying to handle all 8 areas at once.

So that said, let us look a the different areas that make up the wheel - the order they are placed in is quite important.

The main areas are as follows:-

Home        Family        Work        Friends        Wellbeing        Relationships

Adventure        Money

and so we need to establish a base line for each area.  This will give a point from which we can move forwards.  To do this rate each area a score of between 1 and 10 where 1 is the lowest (it really sucks) and 10 is the highest (it can't get and better than this).

Once you have done this then take your lowest scoring segment and work to increase its score by a total of 3 points during the next 4 weeks.  These baby steps are vital and you will need to do some real thinking to determine ways that you can raise the level by just 1 point per week.

When you find that you have managed to raise the point level for that segment then move on to the next lowest scoring segment and see if you can raise that one by the same amount.

You can, if you have the time, work on more than one section at a time but the aim is to go back to it often and consider what actions you can take to raise the scores.

If you feel it would help you then you could also consider if there is someone you know to who would hold you to account and spur you on to do this work.

So what remains now is to wish you "Good Luck" and say that I hope you are soon hitting 10s all around the wheel.

Wanting More......

        WANTING                                                         MORE.....

Hi it's Dave and today I thought I would bring the life coach within me into the spotlight to talk a little bit about the concept of how you can take charge of your own life.

I have a friend who once said to me that she was feeling really down because (and this is a statement I have used as a title for a book in the past) "It's My Life But Someone Else Leads It!"

What she did not know at the time, was that the girl standing in front of me was the sum total of all the choices that she had made in her life up until that day.  I said to her that the challenge was this "anything that is not working in your life should be looked at closely" and I suggested that she asked herself "Can I grow with this and in this situation?"

I felt that she was suffering something called "Deficiency Motivation" because I had often heard her saying "I don't like where I am" and "I don't like what I have done" and "I can't do this well" the result of this thinking was that it was challenging her personal and even business development.

The natural outcome of "Deficiency Motivation" is to make an assumption that something is wrong and then to attempt to fix it - however the reality is that you will never be able to "fix it".  You will always find that you are always trying to be somewhere else or doing something different but the logical outcome is that you start to suffer with something called Wanting More!

As an example of this let us consider that you want to have a bank balance of  £100,000 (or $) and so you set that as your goal and then work very hard towards getting that sum of money.  It is a struggle and you constantly deny yourself things along the way.

Eventually you reach your goal and you have your 100,000 (£ or $) in the bank.  Over the years this aim has been your life, it is all you know, it has become who you are BUT once you get there you find that it is not enough!

A no limit person never operates from a place of deficiency or lack and they never say "I don't have enough"

In truth you are never going to get enough because quite simply - you are enough already!

So what of my friend?...........she adapted her thinking, changed her patterns and is now running a successful and profitable business working from home and is very happy with both her life and the work that she is doing.

15/11/23 Making My Way Back…….

Hello and Merry Meet After what seems to be an absolute eternity I feel that I am now getting into a position where I can begin to reboot ...
