You Are Not Who You Think You Are!

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

Hi and welcome to the Under Blue Skies.  This week’s post is a compilation of things we could look at in our lives to make some major improvements.  So let us start our title statement – You Are Not Who You Think You Are!

This is not just my own thinking!  But, it is a truism that you need to know who you are – not just how other people see you.  If you don’t know who you are it is very likely that you will be jumping onto every new trend that comes your way, you might be spending numerous Friday evenings attending social meet ups that you did not want to go to anyway, or spending hours on a tread mill at the local gym and yet deep inside you are continually feeling dissatisfaction.

BUT once you know who you are you are actually one step closer to becoming conscious.  You need to know who you are before you can find a partner whose traits and actions are complimentary to your own.

The same is true if you are looking for a new job.  You need to be clear on who you are so that you can determine what sort of job to look for and what you are prepared to do to get it once you have defined it.

And again once you know yourself you can decide which of your friends you don’t actually want to associate with then you can take steps to remove them from your circle and spend more time with the people you do like.

So that said here are some ways you can use to help you home in on finding “You”

1)  What would you do if you only had a fixed time left to live?

If you imagine that your life were coming to an end in a matter of weeks, months or years what would you do if you knew that you did not have an unending supply of time.

What would your purpose be and what would you do to see it through.  What would be the things you would rush to make sure you did before that time came?

2) Take some time out and think about the people you have had the most genuine and strongest feelings for. What have you got in common?

What is it about them that you seek that you don’t have in yourself?

3) What things do you feel you could be interested it?

Life is not about creating yourself, it is actually about unveiling yourself.  If you find something is “awesome” try it for yourself!  You may actually discover that you have hidden talents.  There are many things you could try including classes, studying tutorial videos on You Tube because you will never know what you can do if you don’t try!

4) Who are you when you close the front door on the world?

What do you think? What are your real opinions?  What do you say about other people?  What do you enjoy doing when there is nobody there to watch you?  What clothes are you comfortable wearing?

Consider the person behind closed how far removed is he or she from the person other people know.  Can you close the gap?

5) If you did not NEED money to survive how would you spend your time?

The way you answer this question points to where your heart is and the things you should be adjusting you life towards doing.  It may not be possible to do the things as a full time way of life but it gives you pointers and thinking about them may show how you can incorporate such things (even in a small way) into your life

6) What Qualities Do You Admire In Other People?

This holds massive clues about what you should be capable of and what you should be working towards.  This is a great way to set goals for yourself because you can see what you admire in others, not what you are jealous of and that is an indicator of what you can work towards

7) What Bothers You Most About Other People?

Truth be told what bother you about other people is what bothers you about yourself and shows you what you cannot come to terms with about who you are.

8) Look At The Relationships and The People Around You

Do you seem to encounter the same things in all your relationships with other people? Do you feel that everyone you have known has treated you the same way?  Consider all the friendships and relationships that have ended.  Have you just put it down to bad luck or that they are ill fated?

The one factor running in common with them all is – YOU!

It is time for a long hard look at these relationships – because to be able to move into relationships you want you have to work out why you don’t yet have them!

9) Check Out The Physical Space!

Look at the things you keep in your space, do you see repeating patterns, colours, types of products, the clothes you choose, the products you use?   The things we surround ourselves with (consciously or unconsciously) define who we are and when those things are cluttered or disorganised that speaks loudly about you!

10) Make Lists

Look at the things you like and dislike
Look at ways you want to spend your time and the ways you don’t want to spend it
Look at the things you value and the things that you don’t place any value on
This opens the door to self evaluation and if there is anything that does not align with your life it is time to make a plan to get rid of it.  This sort of work is very valuable because it can, and does, help you to change your life.

So once you have completed the above steps you should find that your life is very much different to the way it is today.

A Short Description Of Play

Hi and welcome to the first of the Under Blue Skies blogs for October (The Month of Play).  I looked around for a description of the play that I could use and although this article cites children as its main focus I felt it was the best description I had found during all my research.

Do Less / Do More

(photograph - ©2018 wytchwynd photography)

Recently I have been working towards creating a clearer and (slightly) more organised life for myself.  Doing that has meant a sizeable chunk of soul searching and looking at myself from the outside.  This post is about the results of one particular exercise that I carried out recently.

A Different Look at Self Esteem

Self esteem is the relationship that you have with yourself, you might say it is the way that you talk to yourself behind closed doors, where no-one can hear you.

How do you talk to yourself?  Are you kind to yourself?  Do you talk to yourself respectfully?

So let us look a little more deeply at some of the rubbish that we allow ourselves to say internally.

Listen closely to how you talk to yourself.  Do you call yourself names or bury yourself in ‘should’ statements? There are many dysfunctional ways of thinking that we call all be caught by. It is important to avoid the most common thinking traps that I have listed below:-

Should, Must or Ought
You tell yourself how you “should”, “must”, or “ought” to feel and behave. However, this is NOT how you actually feel or behave. The result is that you are constantly anxious and disappointed with yourself and/or with others around you.

Imagining Catastrophic Situations
In this scenario we always imagine that the worst possible thing is about to happen, and predict that we will not be able to cope with the outcome. However, the imagined worst-case scenario usually never happens and even if it did, we are often able to cope with it.

Filtering
This is when we only pay attention to the bad things that happen and ignore all the good things we are filtering information. This prevents us from looking objectively at all the aspects of a situation and drawing a more balanced conclusion.

Over-estimating danger
This is when we believe that something which is unlikely to happen is actually right around the corner. It is easy to see how this type of thinking can maintain our anxiety. For example, how can you not feel scared if you think that you could have a heart attack any time?

Labelling
Sometimes we talk to ourselves in mean ways and use a single negative word to describe ourselves. This kind of thinking is both unhelpful and unfair. We are too complex to be summed up in a single word!

Over-generalization
This is when we use words like “always” or “never” to describe situations or events. This type of thinking is not helpful because it does not take all situations or events into account. For example, sometimes we make mistakes, but we don’t always make mistakes.

Mind-reading
Sometimes when we believe that we know what others are thinking we assume that they are thinking the worst of us. The truth is that no-one can read minds, so we do not really know what other people are thinking!

Black-and-white thinking
This happens when we only look at situations in terms of extremes. We assume that things are good or bad, a success or a failure. But, in reality, most events call for a more “moderate” explanation. For example:- cheating once on your diet does not mean you have failed completely. You had a small setback, and all you need to do is to get back on your diet tomorrow

Fortune-telling
I have personally got a number of clients to whom this type of thinking applies. This happens when we predict that things will turn out badly. But, in reality, we cannot predict the future!

Another way we can get ourselves into troubled waters is not challenging our thoughts.   You can do this quite simply by asking yourself “Would I say this to a friend of mine?”

If the answer is absolutely not! Then why would you speak to yourself that way.

Some ideas you can use to help you raise your self esteem

Talk to yourself in the 3rd person

Instead of saying “I can manage this situation” say “insert your name you can manage this situation.”

Remember this

Feeling hurt or upset does not mean that you are bad. Feeling uncomfortable does not imply that there is something wrong with you!

A feeling is simply that – it is a feeling

Please recognize that accepting and managing certain feelings can be difficult, especially when we don’t know how to do it.

Building our self-esteem by changing how we treat ourselves can be challenging.
So if you feel that the tips mentioned here are not enough to help you build your self esteem on your own, or you would like to see positive results faster, consider working with a specialist coach or counsellor.
