Success Mindset 2018



Success is not Genetic

Irrespective of what you might have been led to believe it does not follow that if your parents were successful business people you will also enjoy that same success. 

There is a statement that forms part of a comedy sketch that I have heard many times and that is “I didn’t get where I am today by……………..” 

My father used it in a conversation with me as I was about to head off into the big wide world.  He was talking about the work path I was embarking on, and he repeated the phrase to me as did his father to him.   I am also pretty certain I have said the very same phrase to my daughters.

But seriously the underlying truth is that you have to work to be successful, it is by no means a given!.

Unwaivering Belief in Yourself

To become successful you have to have a solid belief in yourself.  You have to believe that you can do something and you will do it properly. 

No matter what the challenges along the way, you know deep inside you that you will find the necessary resources and self will to overcome the trials that are presented to you.

Commitment

Alongside the belief in yourself that we have already spoken about it is vital that you are committed to making your venture succeed. 

That means that if it is a part of the project that you need to get up at 5am every morning, then you must be in no doubt that you will do that.

Similarly if the commitment required is to travel 10 miles to the office and 10 miles back then that is what you have to do. 

If you are a blogger like myself and many others then it should be understood that that to remain effective you need to write a new post every week (or whatever schedule you determine) To achieve this schedule you must be prepared to do whatever it takes to get those posts written and onto your blog on time.

Patience

It is imperative that you understand the quality of patience.  There is an old saying that goes “Rome was not built in a day” and this is so very true. 

It takes time to build a following or a group of customers who will buy your product or service on a regular basis.  Having been involved with business for a large number of years I have yet to find a business that serves each customer only once.  Every business needs customers to buy one product and come back every time that product needs replacing. 

That brand loyalty takes time to build and once done can be very rewarding.

Perseverance

It is often necessary when developing a business or a product to keep repeating the formula until you find the one that actually works for you.  A great example of this is a child learning to ride a bike.  If everyone gave up trying after they fell off there would be far fewer bikes around.  It takes time and many failed attempts to actually master the art of staying upright whilst riding on two wheels.

Consistent Action

As I said in the previous section perseverance is necessary when attempting to master riding a bicycle, but also akin to that is taking consistent action.  It would be of no use to attempt to ride it one day and then not revisit it for a year expecting that in that year you would somehow have developed the skill to be able to ride.

Continuous Improvement – Work Smarter

Now it is time for a list……… here are a few work smarter tips

1.       don’t email – phone (it makes for more personal contact)
2.     create a “to don’t” list – things that you should not do whilst working
3.     be concise
4.     ask questions
5.     learn as much as you can
6.     look after your number one resource – yourself!!

Self Forgiveness

Nobody is perfect!   We can all make mistakes and get things wrong.  The key thing is to learn from those mistakes and not to continually beat yourself up about it.

Gratitude

This point is at the bottom of the list because arguably it is the strongest of all the points I have made.  It holds up and underpins everything I have been talking about. 

Whatever your business is you need customers (the people who pay you to be in business) and so it naturally follows that if whatever your actions lost those customers then you would pretty soon be “out of business”

It is important to express gratitude to the people who keep your business afloat.  That may be by way of a loyalty bonus, a thank you for your custom note each time they purchase or some other way. 

So in conclusion there is a particular mindset that all successful people have and if you want to join their ranks then you have to develop the Success Mindset.
